Those precious early days, weeks and months of your new baby fly by so quickly - you blink and, amongst the leaky boobs, sleepy cuddles and explosive poos, and all of a sudden you have a 6 month old.
Although there’s no magic way of stopping the clock, taking your baby for a professional photo shoot is a timeless way of capturing those moments... They even make wonderful gifts, ideal for those tricky to buy for relatives!
Here we walk you through our process, giving you one less thing to think about amongst the sleepless nights.
Our Baby photography package covers up until your baby can sit unaided (we have a Sitter package perfect for that!). But at what age you have your shoot depends on the look you want to achieve.
Sometimes the birth experience isn’t kind to mama or baby and causes a delay in being able to book a newborn session. We always try to achieve the look you’re after, but if it gets to an age when this isn’t safe to do, then we’ll work together on an alternative look instead.
Typically, babies are most sleepy and flexible up until the first two to three weeks after their birth. This is the perfect time for those posed captures in adorable props.
By the time your baby reaches roughly 4 weeks, they’re more awake and alert, and it starts to become less likely that we’d safely be able to pose them in some of the traditional “newborn” positions. However this doesn’t mean we can’t capture some incredibly cute, even sleepy, images whilst still incorporating props.
From then on, you’re gonna get an altogether different style of baby capture, likely to be full of smiles, tummy time and funny faces!
As part of the booking process, we will always check with you whether you have any preferences, things to avoid or whether you’ve seen something you’d like to replicate.
We don’t recommend shooting in normal baby clothes, so there is no need to bring outfits although you’re welcome to bring any sentimental items for us to work into the styling. We always recommend plain colours for anyone else to be involved and you can learn more about this over on our What to Wear blog.
We have a wide range of backdrops, props, wraps, accessories - the list goes on (and soon we’re gonna need a bigger boat!) - and this allows us to achieve a wide range of preferences or, if you’re happy for us to take the lead, create something specifically for you.
There are no additional charges for any of the setup but the number of props will depend on the level of package you’ve opted for.
Our Basic level provides captures of your baby on a simple posing beanbag, as well as images with the family.
The next two levels (Standard and Premium) add on an additional designed prop each level, as well as the beanbag and family images. Make yourself comfy, as these shoots can take a few hours!
Generally speaking, you can sit back and relax while I work through the shoot with your little one, either in the studio or just outside in the waiting area. You’re most welcome to enjoy the wifi code and a hot cuppa.
But there are likely to be instances where, for safety, I may need you to sit to the side of your baby to make sure they’re kept safe at all times.
We may also need to work as a team to settle or feed them, in order to get those cute sleepy shots. Other than that, you can sit back and enjoy the white noise.
Let’s face it, professional photography can be expensive.
The fee covers an array of costs that you as a customer will never see, as well as experience. But, we all know how broke we can get on maternity leave, and many of us simply don’t have the money for an expensive photo shoot. That's why we price our packages at affordable rates.
If things don't go to plan, and baby is too unsettled, we may suggest a reschedule at no extra cost - but this will depend on how long we've been trying to settle.
I suppose you could call us budget photographers without the budget quality.
We don’t provide any physical prints on any of our shoots at the moment. This would not only increase our prices and turnaround time, but also restrict you to a specific size and number of photos.
Instead, your digital images are high resolution and unrestricted, meaning you can print them on anything, as many times as you like. We only ask that you always download your images, instead of screenshots, to maintain the quality.
You can find advice and tips on printing your digital images over on our Guide to printing your images blog.
Whether you’ve had a photo shoot like this before or not, we hope that this information helps you understand our process a little more as you make your decisions.
If you’d like to discuss it more, you can contact us, or you can find more information on our Prices page.
