Our top 5 extra special birthday shoot ideas

Having professional photos taken of your children as they grow up is a beautiful keepsake idea, both for the parent and the children to look back on.

They’ve become more and more popular as technology continues to improve, photography gets more creative and particularly with trends such as cake smashes.

So how do you make your own photo shoot extra special without blowing the bank? Here we give you our top 5 ideas for making your birthday shoot one to remember.

Custom cake smashes

The popularity of cake smashes has sky-rocketed recently, and there’s no surprise when your littles look so cute devouring (or sometimes just prodding at) a creamy cake!

We still have so much love for these types of birthday celebrations, so much so that we offer them up to the age of 5, incorporating some fun decorating into the activity.

In order to make them stand out, use a photographer that will provide a custom cake smash, in a theme that stands out or reflects the personality of your little one. For example, for our 4 year old’s cake smash, we created this starry night theme as he has a wonderful fascination with space (I often get “I love you to Mercury and back – or even Saturn if I’m lucky!) and so this suited him down to the ground.

Within reason, we can bring your ideas and requests to life, so don’t settle for the same old design for your cake smash, let’s get creative.

Glitter isn’t just for girls

Probably my all-time favourite type of photo shoot to capture is a glitter shoot. I’m sure there isn't a parent out there that’s surprised to hear that it’s my least favourite to clean up however. But it’s so worth the effort.

The amount of fun both adults and children have throwing, blowing and dancing around in scoopfuls of chunky glitter... it’s just the best experience.

We offer a selection of glitter and backdrop colours to suit your preferences and the contrasts of your choice, and you can even bring balloons into the shoot as that also looks great.

During editing, we add in some extra sparkles to make the finished capture even more special.

Be warned though - you may be finding glitter for...well forever.

Powder paint

Now this one is a messy one. Actually, there seems to be a trend here, doesn’t there!

In all seriousness, this one is not one for your most expensive clothes, although they too will become a keepsake of the event.

But what is a powder paint shoot? Also known as holi powder, we use powdered paint (think colour run type stuff) in a similar way to the glitter - it gets thrown around, clapped, blown onto them, stomped in, and probably thrown at you too (sorry!).

Black or white clothing is recommended to really help the colours stand out, and your kids will look like little walking rainbows by the end of it. Another really fun one with great results.

Balloons

Before you shrug this one off as boring, please take my word for it that using balloons in a special shoot can bear beautiful results.

Whether it’s a single giant balloon in a field of wildflowers, a big busy balloon arch in a themed studio design or fastened to a basket to look like a hot air balloon, there is magic in the simplicity of balloons, and just how much kids love them.

Because of the vast potential, we cant list all of the ideas here, but please do contact us for some styles that we can do (without any mess).

Location, location, location

You probably have a favourite place, somewhere special that is just a beauty for professional photographs. And if not, we know a bunch.

Let’s go there!

Whether you want your little dressed as an ethereal fairy, robin hood, a dinosaur or just in their best wear, conducting your photo shoot in a beautiful place you love with always bring back fond memories.

The beach, a National Trust venue, a castle, whatever it is, we can meet you there. We may also be able to bring some of our props with us, depending on the look you’re after and the venue.

The weather doesn’t even have to dampen the effect (although we’d probably draw the line at stormy), as we can add in a huge array of realistic effects - no one need know that sunlight wasn’t there - or even just take a giant umbrella and involve some puddle jumping too.

As you can see, there is so much potential for making your birthday photo shoot unique and special, and without spending a tonne of money. And if these sound a bit too much for your taste, we can always keep it clean and simple in the studio.

We hope you liked our suggestions, and you are welcome to chat with us about a unique photo shoot for your loved ones.
